Episode 2 Behind the Scenes

Welcome back to behind the scenes!

Episode two went by way more smoothly than episode one. Since I fought my way through the technology and the clunky interfaces of social media once before, the second time was much easier. This episode had a much faster turnaround time from its conception than the first episode as well, and with objectively stronger results.

There's not too much to say about this episode. It originally was going to be in black and white due to the horrors of coloring the first episode and the endless hours spent doing that. However, to achieve what I wanted, coloring in black and white would take the same effort as going full color. So why not just do that? Otherwise, this episode was pretty streamline. I will say however that future episodes will likely be different. Just because going digital like I've been doing has been tedious and super repetitive. So, I am toying around with exploring different mediums. Episode three, for instance, will be hand painted. As far as future episodes go, we'll see. Perhaps I'll do one in watercolor, maybe in colored pencil, heck maybe I'll use paper cutouts. This not only makes creating an episode more fun but is also more fun to look at. Again, all this is up in the air; nothing official. The only thing you can expect for sure is that episode three will be handpainted (cuz I already started it hahaha!)

With that out the way, here are the roughs for episode two for your viewing pleasure. These aren't nearly as polished as the ones in the first one, but you know who cares? Not me obviously.

Episode 1 Behind the Scenes

Hooray, this is the first behind the scene post!

Things are going to go like this: after each episode, I'll discuss what it was like making the episode as well as post the entire rough draft of it. That way you can see what the original paper version looks like. Now, I know you're jumping up and down in excitement so let's get into the first episode.

This was a series I had in the works since 2015. I didn't actually start on it until this past fall (oops). But throughout the past almost four years now, I've been scheming up various ideas and getting a cast of characters together. Speaking of characters, each of the main four has their own background. I never made any of the main four specifically for this project; rather I made them at other points of my life and eventually combined them together. Fun fact, Cheetah and Lucky were made while I was in elementary school. Thom and Keith were made when I was a freshman in high school. They each had their own stories that never seen the light of day, but, I felt they work well together and now BOOM. They're here. Just to quickly list their origins: Lucky's original story back in third grade was that he was a chef (and totally not a Chowder rip off... okay maybe it was). Cheetah was an attempt also in third grade to make a character and series that was original (like I said, Lucky was a Chowder rip off, but he was one of my many "series" that completely ripped off actual shows). Keith was part of some Candyland type thing that I never had gotten around to fleshing out. Thom has always just been Thom.

For this first episode, it took longer than it should've to put together. It was made quite a while before I actually posted it so it's rougher than what is currently in the works. Episode 2 which has just been posted at the time of this post is a bit cleaner. Most of the time was spent struggling with the technology to get it out. Being a primarily traditional artist, using a tablet was quite a challenge and it shows. As you'll see in the roughs, the drawings in those are better than the digital version. BUT this whole project is just to have some fun. Lighten up, man.

Without further ado, here are the roughs to episode one.
